A LESSON IN LOVE

While its origins can be traced back to ancient Rome, where the 13, 14 and 15 February were celebrated as Lupercalia, a pagan fertility festival, St. Valentine’s Day has evolved somewhat through the centuries.

In 1382 Geoffrey Chaucer wrote his Parlement of Foules (or “Parliament of Fowls”), which associates St. Valentine's Day to romantic love. Before our famous bard, William Shakespeare brings it to the popular consciousness in 1601 through Ophelia's lament in Hamlet. Then in the mid 18th century the passing of love-notes - made of lace and paper - becomes popular in England and as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St. Valentine's Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they became so popular that factories had begun to mass-produce them. Then in 1913 Hallmark Cards produced its first Valentine making the date a flagship “Hallmark Holiday”. And where are we now? Well an estimated 1 billion St. Valentine's Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most card-heavy celebration after Christmas.

So how are you planning on celebrating this year? With a traditional verse beginning “Roses are red, Violets are blue…”? With flowers, chocolates or jewellery perhaps? This year, why not try something a little different that both of you can enjoy?

At Feversham Arms Hotel and Verbena Spa we have created a host of packages designed to pamper and indulge the one you love in the idyllic surroundings of the North Yorkshire Moors. Why not get cosy in one of our charming poolside cottages, settling down in front of your own log burning stove to watch a romantic film classic from our movie library? Then at dusk take a dip in the outdoor heated pool before enjoying a sumptuous dinner in our renowned restaurant. The next day, wake up to breakfast in bed before enjoying a day of luxury and pampering in the Verbena Spa.
