5 reasons Helmsley is the best at Christmas

We are rather biased here at the Feversham Arms but we think our award-winning market town really is one of the best places to spend the festive season.

Not only do we get the chance to enjoy the rustic, rural charm of the surrounding north Yorkshire countryside during the winter months, we also get to hide out next to roaring fires tasting homemade mulled wine and local food.

But there are some very unique things that make Christmas in Helmsley special. So we thought we would share our five favourite things about our town during the festive season.

1. Homemade mince pies from Hunter

Being foodies ourselves the anticipation in the run up to Christmas is heightened by the prospect of the festive food and drink. Most importantly we eagerly awaited the first batch of mince pies from Hunters of Helmsley. And when they arrived the delicious little treats were worth the wait. We think they taste all the more lovely because we know the family run delicatessen uses local produce – with 70 per cent of goods in store sourced from within Yorkshire.

2. Christmas Tree Festival

Now finished for 2015, this year the annual Christmas Tree Festival showed as always how wonderful the community spirit is within Helmsley. With a theme of Pantomime we took part with our ‘Mirror Mirror’ tree, which shone beautifully at All Saints Church along with all the other trees, and was adorned with handmade decorations by Tracey, part of our reservations co-ordinating team.

3. Christmas shopping at Nice Things

Located at the heart of Helmsley in the market square Nice Things is a festive favourite amongst visitors and locals alike. Filled with unique gifts and toys the store prides itself on having exquisite Christmas decorations and is a must visit.

4. Ice Skating at The Black Swan

Another activity that is synonymous with Christmas in Helmsley is the pop-up ice rink at The Black Swan Hotel. Overlooking the market square this year’s ice rink had a winter wonderland theme, with glistening ice and a white picket fence. A joyful experience for children and adults alike, and definitely a festive highlight in our part of the world.

5. Swimming in the outdoor heated pool here at the Feversham Arms Hotel

Last but of course not least, one of our favourite things to do in Helmsley at this time of year is take an alfresco dip in our outdoor pool. Being located in North Yorkshire we know it can be nippy in December but we heat our pool so you will always be able to dive in and enjoy a leisurely swim in the water here. Something that makes Helmsley truly unique at Christmas.
